Lauterbrunnen, the valley of the 72 waterfalls, is an idyllic Swiss village located in a beautiful valley nestled at the foot of the Eiger and Jungfrau Mountains. Towering snow-capped peaks, high-altitude waterfalls and rough valley sides create a dramatic backdrop.
Located 13 km’s from Interlaken in the Jungfrau region, the beauty of the Lauterbrunnen valley is indescribable. It’s surprisingly accessible by train, and there’s a wide range of things to do in Lauterbrunnen.
This untouched village is popular throughout the year. But if you head there in the spring or summer, you’ll get the best of both worlds – snow-capped peaks and an endless array of scenic hikes and walks.
Top Things to do in Lauterbrunnen
1. Take a train to the Top of Europe: Jungfraujoch
Lauterbrunnen is famous for its convenient access to one of the summits of the Bernese Alps – the Jungfrau. And for rail travel fans, the good news is that you can get tantalizingly close to the summit by train. The Jungfraujoch station, at 3,454 meters above sea level, is the highest railway station in Europe. The ride is almost as thrilling as the sights that await you at the top.
Insider tip: Show your Eurail Pass pass when booking – Eurail Pass Holders receive a 25 percent discount on the fare to the Jungfraujoch. Also highly recommended to dress warm clothes even in summer. Click here to find more details about Jungrau in our separate post.
This is one of the best places to pick your paragliding experience. The flights are among the most scenic and dramatic in the world. You’ll leave with a whole new perspective of the region.
Tip: There are several paragliding companies in the region. If you want to float over Lauterbrunnen, take a look at offerings from www.paragliding-jungfrau.ch.
3. Trummelbach Falls
Trummelbach Falls are unique with ten glacial waterfalls hammering down inside the mountain, unloading 20 000 litres of water per second. It is accessible to the public by an internal lift, viewing platforms and walkways.
Depending on the season and the weather, opening times vary. It is best to check opening times before visiting.
4. Staubbach Falls
With a height of nearly 300 meters, Staubbach Falls is the third highest waterfall in Switzerland. In the summer warm winds swirl the waters in all directions. This waterfall is located just outside the village and across the road from Camping Jungfrau. Walking behind the waterfall is just a short walk up the valley, and there’s a marked pathway that takes you behind the water.
Insider tip: The walk up to Staubbachfall can be a bit slippery, so borrow a pair of hiking poles at the start of the pathway to help keep your balance.
We spent a day in Grindelwald and took the cable car up to Männlichen. The Männlichen is a 2,343 metre mountain in the Swiss Alps located within the Canton of Berne. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side. And we could enjoy the views just for 15 mins until we were surrounded by dense clouds and some rain. But they have a good indoor restaurant which serves some delicious food and snacks!
Grindelwald is a spectacular place, and I would highly recommend a visit, or even stay a few nights if your itinerary allows.
The Schilthorn is a summit in Europe, in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. It overlooks the valley of Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland, and is the highest mountain in the range lying north of the Sefinenfurgge Pass. The Schilthorn lies above the village of Mürren, from where a cable car leads to its summit.
Schilthorn is famous for the popular 1969 James Bond Film – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Show your Eurail Pass when purchasing a ticket, so you can get a significant discount on Schilthorn gondola tickets.
Visit the quaint traditional village of Murren only accessible by cable car from Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg is a stop on the way to Schilthorn. Mürren is a car-free village and is the highest village in the Bernese Oberland.
8. Take a ride
Lauterbrunnen is also famous for its mountain biking, and it’s a great way to cover additional distance on the ground.
10. Take a boat ride in Lake Brienz
One of the best and most relaxing ways to experience the lakes is by taking one of the many boat services which cross the waters. Taking the boat as a means of transport to visit the lovely towns of Brienz, Thun or several other small villages can be like a pleasure cruise to take in the scenic surroundings. Check out our post about Lake and town Brienz for more details.
